Southwest Sumba — Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on Oct. 5 that an emergency command post had been activated in Southwest Sumba to coordinate the response to damage from the earthquake. The latest update counted 95 damaged homes in the regency.
The post is coordinated by the Southwest Sumba local government, while the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in the affected regencies continues field verification and monitoring. BNPB said the updated count, recorded at 12:15 a.m. Western Indonesian Time on Oct. 5, comprised one heavily damaged home, 12 moderately damaged homes and 82 lightly damaged homes.
The earthquake struck Sumba Barat Daya, in East Nusa Tenggara, on Oct. 4 at 6:55 a.m. Reports said the magnitude-6.1 tremor was felt in Southwest Sumba, West Sumba and West Manggarai. Damage also included public facilities, and an earlier BNPB update reported one minor injury.
Why it matters for residents and visitors
The command post gives the local government a central mechanism for tracking damage, coordinating technical response and organizing assistance. For foreign residents and visitors in Southwest Sumba, the development means that official local authorities are managing the immediate assessment and response, while residents are being asked to follow local instructions and check buildings before re-entering them.
BNPB said the damage figures remained subject to further updates. The agency also said BPBD teams in the two regencies were verifying conditions in the field to support aid distribution and technical handling. No closing date for the emergency post or separate timetable for completing the assessment was provided.
