Kodi and Perokonda — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore southwest of Kodi in Sumba Barat Daya on Sunday, October 4, 2026, damaging a school and two homes in Perokonda and leaving one person with minor injuries, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Why it matters: The earthquake damaged one school and two homes in Perokonda, injured one person lightly and was felt in Labuan Bajo and other parts of East Nusa Tenggara.

The earthquake occurred at 6:55 a.m. Central Indonesia Time, with its epicentre in the sea southwest of Kodi. BMKG said the earthquake had no tsunami potential.

BMKG’s initial earthquake bulletin placed the event 14 kilometres southwest of Kodi at a depth of 10 kilometres. A later BMKG update gave an updated magnitude of 5.9 and a depth of 30 kilometres.

The agency said damage was reported in Perokonda village, including an Islamic elementary school and two homes. It categorised damage reported in several areas as moderate and said one person had suffered minor injuries.

Shaking was also felt in Labuan Bajo, in West Manggarai, and other parts of East Nusa Tenggara, according to local reports. Residents in Labuan Bajo were reported to have run outside during the earthquake.

BMKG said the earthquake was a shallow event associated with activity on an active fault, which the agency provisionally linked to the Waikabubak Fault. The agency also reported aftershocks following the main shock.
