Kodi — A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred offshore south of Kodi in Southwest Sumba on Oct. 12, according to information attributed to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, Indonesia’s national weather and geophysics service. The report placed the epicenter 19 kilometres south of Kodi and said the tremor was felt in Sumba.
The earthquake was recorded at 23:56:33 Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7), according to the report. It listed the epicenter at 9.75 degrees south latitude and 118.93 degrees east longitude, and said shaking reached intensity III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale in Sumba.
Why the earthquake matters to residents and visitors
For people in Southwest Sumba, the report indicates that the event was felt locally but does not describe casualties, structural damage or disruption to transport. For foreign residents and visitors, the information identifies a local offshore earthquake rather than a broader closure or evacuation order. The report does not state that a tsunami warning was issued.
The event follows an earlier, stronger earthquake in the same general area. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Southwest Sumba on Oct. 4, with damage and one minor injury reported in coverage of that event. That earlier earthquake was assessed by the national geophysics agency as having no tsunami potential. The Oct. 12 report concerns a separate magnitude 4.3 event.
