Kodi — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck offshore 14 kilometres south of Kodi, Southwest Sumba, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, known as BMKG, recorded the event at 04:38:04 WIB, or 05:38:04 WITA.
The earthquake was located at 9.72° south latitude and 118.96° east longitude, at a depth of 19 kilometres. BMKG said the shaking was felt at intensity II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale in Southwest Sumba and that the event did not pose a tsunami threat.
Why the earthquake matters to residents and visitors
The earthquake occurred offshore near Kodi, a district in Southwest Sumba. For foreign residents and visitors in the area, the reported intensity indicates light shaking, while the agency advised the public to remain alert for possible aftershocks. No deaths, injuries or structural damage linked to this magnitude 4.6 event were identified.
The earthquake followed another tremor in the Kodi area earlier on Tuesday. BMKG’s information identified the later event as part of the seismic activity affecting Southwest Sumba.
