Gianyar Finals Set for Traditional Design Contest With 24 Entries

Gianyar — Gianyar’s craft council has put 24 entries into the final stage of a traditional clothing and jewellery competition that is part of the district’s 2026 cultural programme, according to the Gianyar Regency government and local reports. The contest is designed to keep Balinese identity visible in contemporary design while supporting the local creative economy.

The competition is tied to Gianyar Creative Heritage 2026 and is being presented alongside the district’s wider cultural events for this year, with the main showcase set during Gianyar Cultural Week on 12 April 2026, according to the official regency website and local coverage. The official account says the programme is being used to highlight creative talent in clothing and jewellery while promoting local craft businesses.

In the clothing category, 14 finalists are working with Balinese textiles such as songket, endek and gringsing, while 10 designers are competing in the silver jewellery category, the sources say. The organisers describe the clothing brief as focused on ready-to-wear designs that draw from traditional Balinese cloth, while the jewellery brief gives designers more room to develop forms that reflect Gianyar’s cultural character.

Parallel judging

According to the official regency account, judging is being carried out in parallel to move the process along more efficiently. Jewellery finalists present their concepts and cultural themes while clothing designs are shown and assessed at the same time.

The competition also asks participants to explain the cultural values behind their work, reflecting the organisers’ aim of pairing heritage preservation with product innovation.
