Sanur — Tourism accommodation providers in Sanur were involved in preparing a decarbonisation action plan for the area on Oct. 18, 2026, as the city works to develop Sanur as a low-emission tourism zone.
The programme is intended to identify emissions from hotel operations, energy use, the movement of tourists and workers, and everyday supply chains. Participants were introduced to a corporate decarbonisation framework based on the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which covers direct operations as well as indirect emissions linked to energy use and suppliers.
Sanur was designated a Kawasan Rendah Emisi, or Low-Emission Area, under Denpasar Mayor Regulation No. The policy treats tourism as one of the sectors requiring attention in efforts to reduce emissions.
Why Sanur’s plan matters to visitors and foreign residents
For visitors and foreign residents, the change means that environmental measures are being considered across the tourism system rather than only through new infrastructure. Hotel energy consumption, transport choices and the goods brought into properties are all part of the assessment.
The focus on Scope 3 emissions is especially significant. These are indirect emissions outside a company’s direct ownership or control, including those connected with suppliers and other parts of the value chain. Better operational records are expected to help businesses identify which sources should be reduced first.
The initiative was part of a wider programme involving the Denpasar City Tourism Office, WRI Indonesia and the Bali Net-Zero Emissions Coalition. A separate report said eight hotel businesses took part in activities held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 13, 2026, to identify decarbonisation opportunities, contribute to the area action plan and explore cooperation on implementation.
The reporting does not state a final emissions target or a completion date for the Sanur action plan. It describes the current phase as mapping emissions, gathering business input and developing measures suited to hotel operations and supply chains.
