Denpasar — Indonesian immigration authorities have deported a 59-year-old Australian man, identified as MS, to Sydney after he completed an 18-year sentence and subsequent parole supervision for a narcotics conviction in Bali.
The Denpasar Immigration Detention Centre (Rumah Detensi Imigrasi/Rudenim Denpasar) carried out the deportation as an immigration administrative action under Article 75(1) of Indonesia’s Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011, according to statements from Rudenim officials reported by local media.
MS was previously convicted under Article 113(2) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics for smuggling methamphetamine into Bali.
The case began on October 1, 2010, when Customs officers arrested him at the international arrivals terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport after he arrived from Bangkok on an AirAsia flight.
Officers discovered approximately 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in a cavity inside his suitcase.
During his trial at the Denpasar District Court, MS denied knowing the drugs were in the luggage and claimed the suitcase belonged to an acquaintance he had met in Bangkok, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in prison.
Release, supervision and transfer to immigration custody
After spending more than a decade in prison, MS’s sentence was reduced by a total of 37 months and 30 days through remission, and he was granted parole in 2023, according to reports citing Indonesian correctional authorities.
Following his release on parole, he remained under the supervision of the Denpasar Class I Correctional Centre (Balai Pemasyarakatan/Bapas Kelas I Denpasar) until his supervision period ended on August 19, 2026.
After the end of correctional supervision, MS was handed over to the Singaraja Class II Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi Kelas II TPI Singaraja) for immigration processing.
He was then transferred to Rudenim Denpasar on August 24, 2026, where he was held in temporary immigration detention while officials completed travel arrangements and documentation for his removal.
Deportation to Sydney
Rudenim Denpasar head Teguh Mentalyadi said the detention centre coordinated with the Australian Consulate-General to secure travel documents and arrange the flight to Australia.
Local reports state that after 11 days in immigration detention, MS was escorted by Rudenim Denpasar officers on a flight to Sydney on Friday night, September 4, 2026.
Immigration officials have framed the case as an example of Indonesia’s firm stance toward foreign nationals involved in narcotics offences, emphasizing that immigration measures can follow the completion of criminal sentences.
