Denpasar — Bali’s electricity sales reached about 5,487 gigawatt-hours through August 2026, up 8.48% from a year earlier, according to PLN Unit Induk Distribusi Bali and reports from local media. PLN said the increase was driven largely by business customers as the island’s economy and commercial activity expanded.
The utility’s Bali unit said medium-voltage customers numbered 884, with combined contracted capacity of about 822.33 MVA and consumption of more than 1,131 GWh by August, indicating that business demand remained a major contributor to overall growth. The customer group includes hotels, shopping centres, hospitals, industry, transport and logistics operations.
PLN general manager Ajrun Karim said the company was asking customers about planned business expansion so supply could be prepared ahead of new demand, according to local reports. PLN also offers a temporary added-capacity service for medium-voltage customers whose higher electricity needs are limited to certain periods.
Bali’s peak system load had reached around 1,295 to 1,300 megawatts by late August, according to separate local reporting. That level matters because the grid must meet demand at its busiest point, not just over a full year.
PLN has also pointed to solar power as part of its response to rising demand. Local reports said the utility is examining ground-mounted, floating and rooftop solar options as part of its longer-term supply planning, while officials have separately discussed Bali’s substantial solar resource potential.
Key figures reported by PLN
- Electricity sales through August 2026: about 5,487 GWh
- Year-on-year growth: 8.48%
- Medium-voltage customers: 884
- Combined contracted capacity: about 822.33 MVA
- Medium-voltage consumption: more than 1,131 GWh
- Peak system load: around 1,295-1,300 MW
The rise in sales comes after PLN had already reported 8.02% growth in electricity consumption in Bali during the first half of 2026, a pace that local media described as among the highest in Indonesia. The August figures suggest that demand continued rising into the third quarter.
