Bali Police map Nyepi and takbiran security at 308 sites in March 2026

Denpasar — — Bali Police are preparing a coordinated security operation for the closely timed observances of Nyepi and Idul Fitri in March 2026, including night-time takbiran activities at 308 locations across the province, according to statements by the Bali regional police and national police officials carried in Indonesian media.

Bali Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya outlined the plan during a troop-assembly ceremony for Operation Ketupat Agung 2026 at the Bali Police Mobile Brigade headquarters in Denpasar in mid-March 2026, according to local reports quoting his remarks.

Police and national officials said the security operation is designed to cover the full Nyepi cycle, including Tawur Agung Kesanga, ogoh-ogoh parades, pengerupukan activities and the main day of Nyepi, which is scheduled for Thursday, 19 March 2026 in the Saka 1948 calendar.

Focus on Nyepi rituals and traffic

According to reports citing Inspector General Adityajaya, Bali Police will focus on managing traffic and public order around Tawur Kesanga ceremonies and prayers held at major intersections, known locally as catus pata, on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.

The operation also anticipates roadside placement of ogoh-ogoh, the large ritual sculptures used in pre-Nyepi processions. Police have urged traditional community units, or banjars, to avoid placing ogoh-ogoh along key road corridors, particularly routes serving travellers heading to Gilimanuk and Padangbai ports.

In addition to Nyepi-related rituals, the deployment covers strategic sites across Bali. Reports from regional outlets indicate that Bali Police are assigning personnel to places of worship, including 256 mosques and 539 musalas, along with transport hubs, markets, shopping centres and tourism areas, as part of Operation Ketupat Agung 2026.

Takbiran arrangements and limits

National Police officials have highlighted that Nyepi in Bali will be observed from 19 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA until 20 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA, during which public activities, transport and most communications services are to be halted in line with local regulations.

At the same time, authorities are planning for takbiran, the period of Muslim prayers and proclamations ahead of Idul Fitri 1447 Hijri. When the Bali Police Chief spoke in mid-March, Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs had not yet formally set the Idul Fitri date, with officials considering 21 March as the likely day.

Bali Police have identified 308 locations for takbiran activities across the province, according to multiple regional reports on the operation. These night-time observances are to continue under restrictions designed to respect Nyepi while allowing Muslim worship.

National Police officials have explained that takbiran in Bali will be limited to nearby mosques or musalas, with participants asked to walk rather than use vehicle convoys. They have stated that firecrackers are not allowed and that loudspeakers must not be used excessively. Takbiran hours are set between 18:00 and 21:00 WITA.

Local media reports note that regional government representatives, religious leaders and security agencies have held coordination meetings on managing the proximity of Nyepi and Idul Fitri observances. Police and provincial officials have described the approach as grounded in religious tolerance and moderation, with both Hindu and Muslim activities continuing under agreed limitations.
