Bali Reports 52,645 Rabies-Linked Animal Bites Through 11 September 2026

Denpasar — Bali’s health authorities have recorded 52,645 reported bites from animals that can transmit rabies through 11 September 2026, with 39,193 of those cases attributed in local reporting to animals indicated as rabies-positive, according to local reports citing the Bali Provincial Health Office.

The figures were published on 17 and 18 September by Bali Post and republished in other Bali outlets. Those reports said the total averaged about 219 bite cases a day across the island’s nine regencies and municipalities.

Local reporting also said Bali had recorded seven rabies deaths through mid-September, down from 16 in all of 2025. Badung, Karangasem and Denpasar were among the areas with the highest reported bite totals.

What the reported numbers show

In Indonesian public-health reporting, GHPR refers to bites by animals that can transmit rabies. The reported 52,645 cases covered all nine regencies and municipalities in Bali, but the published material did not provide a breakdown by species, age group or whether the victims were residents or visitors.

The same reporting said 39,193 cases involved animals “indicated as positive for rabies,” using the local term diVAr. It did not explain whether that classification was based on laboratory confirmation, field assessment or another provincial method.

By regency and municipality, the published figures said Badung had 9,961 GHPR cases, Karangasem 6,566, Denpasar 6,480, Gianyar 5,949, Tabanan 5,894, Buleleng 5,687, Jembrana 5,622, Klungkung 3,728 and Bangli 2,758.

The reports also said Badung recorded the highest daily average, at about 42 bite cases a day. Denpasar and Karangasem were said to average about 27 each, followed by Gianyar and Tabanan at 25, Buleleng at 24, Jembrana at 23, Klungkung at 16 and Bangli at 11.

Vaccine stock and response measures

A separate Bali provincial government page on rabies handling indicates the province has an official rabies-control framework in place. Another local report said Bali had 40,881 vials of rabies vaccine in stock across the island’s nine areas, suggesting treatment supplies were available at least at the time of publication.

Those materials do not provide a complete public directory of treatment sites, nor do they set out the full operational response in every district. They do, however, show that rabies remains a standing public-health issue for the province and that vaccine supplies were being tracked locally.

For people bitten, scratched or otherwise exposed to saliva from a potentially rabid animal, the practical point is to seek medical assessment promptly. The local reporting reviewed for this article does not substitute for clinical advice, but it does underscore that the island is still dealing with a high volume of bite incidents.

Why the numbers matter

The cumulative bite figure alone does not show whether the situation is improving or worsening from one district to the next, but it does indicate sustained pressure on Bali’s rabies surveillance and treatment system. The island’s biggest tourism areas, including Badung and Denpasar, were among those with the highest reported totals.

Because the published reports stop at cumulative counts and do not detail every clinic, vaccination post or emergency measure, the clearest confirmed takeaway is the scale of exposure: more than 52,000 reported animal bites in less than nine months, with thousands attributed to animals indicated as rabies-positive.

That makes rabies prevention and prompt treatment a continuing concern for residents, visitors and businesses across Bali.
