Denpasar — Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara said on Thursday, Oct. 29, that the city had allocated Rp15 billion (about US$10 million) for river, drain and waterway normalization at 40 locations as the rainy season approached.

The work, carried out by the Denpasar municipal government, covers rivers, drains and other channels considered to need treatment. The reported locations include Tukad Badung, Tukad Mati and Tukad Loloan in Sanur. The spending is part of a broader 2026 flood-control program that also includes new and improved drainage infrastructure.

Why it matters to readers in Denpasar

For foreign residents and visitors, the project means that flooding risk is being addressed through maintenance of the channels that carry storm water through the city. The works concern public waterways rather than a new rule directed at foreigners. The mayor also called on residents to avoid throwing waste into waterways, warning that blocked drainage can worsen flooding.

Separate reporting said Denpasar had prepared Rp32 billion (about US$21 million) for flood-control work in 2026: Rp17 billion (about US$11 million) for drainage and irrigation improvements, and Rp15 billion (about US$10 million) for normalization at about 40 locations. The normalization is intended to remove sediment and obstructions and restore the capacity of waterways to carry water more effectively.

The drainage system is managed across five areas: Tukad Badung, Tukad Ayung, Tukad Mati, Renon-Panjer-Sanur-Sidakarya and Pemogan. The city reported that drainage construction in 2026 covered 11 locations, while river dredging and normalization covered 40 locations.

The city’s stated target was to complete the normalization work by the end of October 2026, as part of preparations for higher water flows during the rainy season.
