Ngurah Rai Restores Jakarta and Bandung Routes After Anak Krakatau Ash

Denpasar — I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has resumed domestic flights on its key routes to Tangerang, Jakarta and Bandung after disruptions caused by volcanic ash from the Anak Krakatau eruption earlier in September 2026, according to airport management and aviation authorities.

The airport confirmed that services on these routes returned to normal in the early hours of Tuesday, 8 September 2026, following the issuance of updated Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) by AirNav Indonesia declaring the affected airspace safe and the destination airports operational, according to a written statement by airport general manager Nugroho Jati.

The NOTAMs related to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, which had experienced temporary closures and restrictions as ash clouds from Anak Krakatau disrupted air traffic across parts of Java and Bali.

Airport management said it coordinated with AirNav Indonesia, airlines and ground-handling providers to restore operations and adjust schedules as conditions improved. Jati stated that from the early hours of 8 September, operations on the three domestic route groups were once again running normally.

According to the airport’s update, seven airlines — Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air, NAM Air, Indonesia AirAsia and Pelita Air — had resumed normal operations on the affected routes as of Tuesday.

The statement noted that TransNusa services had not yet returned to normal. Four TransNusa flights scheduled for 8 September on the Bali–Jakarta sector remained canceled, even as other carriers restarted full operations on the corridors linking Bali with Greater Jakarta and Bandung.

Earlier data from the airport showed the scale of the disruption. Between 07:00 WITA on Sunday, 6 September and 11:00 WITA on Monday, 7 September, a total of 108 flights at Ngurah Rai were either canceled or had their schedules adjusted due to Anak Krakatau’s activity, according to figures released by the airport’s communications and legal division. Approximately 13,000 passengers were affected over that period, including about 4,400 arrivals and 8,700 departures.

The disruption primarily involved domestic services linking Bali with Soekarno-Hatta, Halim Perdanakusuma and Husein Sastranegara, while international flights in and out of Bali continued to operate, according to local reports and statements from regional officials.

With routes to Tangerang, Jakarta and Bandung re-opened, airport officials advise passengers to continue monitoring airline-specific changes, including possible cancellations, revised departure times and aircraft substitutions, especially in the immediate aftermath of the disruption.

Travelers are encouraged to confirm their bookings and departure details directly with their airline before heading to the airport, as individual flight plans may differ even when route operations are officially declared normal.
