Tabanan Sends Two Iranian Nationals to Immigration After Theft Case

Tabanan — Two Iranian nationals identified as MB, 47, and HM, 54, were handed by the Tabanan Police to the Tabanan Immigration Office on Sept. 22 after an alleged theft case involving a shopkeeper in Bajera. They are now being detained at the Denpasar Immigration Detention Centre while immigration officials complete administrative procedures and prepare for deportation.

The handover followed the police investigation into an alleged theft in Bajera, Tabanan. The two men were arrested in Kuta, Badung, on Sept. 20 after police said they were suspected of taking a shopkeeper’s money during a currency-exchange transaction.

Why the case matters to foreign visitors

For a foreign national in Indonesia, a police case can lead to separate immigration action. Detention at an immigration detention centre is an administrative measure distinct from the criminal investigation. In this case, the Tabanan Immigration Office applied immigration administrative action under Article 75(1) of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration, as amended by Law No. 63 of 2024, citing security and public-order considerations.

The men were transferred to the Denpasar facility after immigration checks and administrative processing at the Tabanan office. The reports state that deportation arrangements remain pending and that no fixed deportation date had been set because administrative procedures were still underway and the men’s readiness to purchase return tickets was still being assessed.
