Tourists Deliver Aid After Denpasar Fire as Seminyak Blaze Injures Two

Denpasar — Foreign tourists brought rice and eggs to a relief post in West Denpasar after a fire displaced 85 households on Jalan Nakula, while authorities continued cooling operations at the site, according to local reports and city officials.

The fire broke out on Monday night, Aug. 31, in the Gang Jatayu area of Pemecutan Kelod, and residents were placed at the Al-Ikhlas mosque or with relatives as the city government and social services expanded their count of affected families from 23 to 85.

Local reports said the fire was still being cooled days later, with crews using excavators to reach embers buried in rubbish and scrap piles. Officials said the extra equipment was needed to prevent hotspots from reigniting.

In a separate incident in Seminyak, Chez Gado-Gado restaurant was badly damaged in a blaze on Sunday evening, Aug. 30. Badung fire crews deployed 10 engines and needed about two hours and 40 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to local reports.

Police said there were no deaths in the restaurant fire. One staff member suffered a hand burn and an Australian teenager was taken to hospital with burns, while investigators continued to examine the cause with Bali police forensic officers.

Police have said the blaze may have started during a birthday gathering when a balloon caught fire after contact with a candle, but the exact cause has not been officially confirmed. Reported losses were estimated at about Rp4 billion, while property valued at about Rp700 million was saved.

The two incidents drew attention for different reasons: one for the scale of displacement in Denpasar and the public response from visitors, the other for the damage to a well-known Seminyak venue popular with international tourists. Both scenes remained under scrutiny as local authorities documented the aftermath.
