Badung — Indonesia is preparing Bali to become the second stage of its financial-centre development after Jakarta, with regulations for the project reported to be in the finalisation stage on Oct. 29, 2026.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto outlined the plan during the International Forum for Government Credit Programs in Nusa Dua, Badung. He said the government had discussed Bali’s potential with state-owned enterprises and that the regulatory framework had been drafted and was being finalised.
The development is planned in stages. Jakarta is being prepared as the first stage, while Bali is being considered for the next phase. The government has linked the project to efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s appeal for financial-sector activity amid global uncertainty and to broaden the sources of economic growth in Bali, which has largely relied on tourism.
Why it matters for Bali’s foreign residents and visitors
The announcement is a development plan, not the launch of a financial centre. For foreign residents, businesses and investors, it signals a possible future expansion of financial-sector activity in Bali, but the reports do not identify a final site, operating date, eligibility rules or any new requirement for foreigners.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster welcomed the plan and said the provincial government would support it while the central government continued to refine the proposal. He said the choice of location would be made by the central government, with Bali following its direction.
The reports describe the project as still being prepared. No implementation timetable or final regulatory text was stated. The next step identified in the coverage is completion of the regulations and further central-government decisions on the project’s development and location.
