What QRIS growth means for Bali’s small-business economy

Bali’s small-business economy is operating in a rapidly expanding digital-payments environment, but national QRIS and transaction figures must not be mistaken for Bali-specific merchant data.

Digital payments are becoming a practical business infrastructure for Bali’s small enterprises, with QRIS adoption expanding nationally and Bank Indonesia reporting stronger turnover among mentored businesses using digital channels. For Bali investors and operators, the evidence points to a changing payments environment, not a measure of Bali-specific merchant totals.

Why do digital payments matter to Bali businesses?

Digital payments can connect small businesses to customers who prefer cashless transactions and give enterprises an additional channel for recording sales. Bank Indonesia says digital payment growth was supported by wider acceptance and describes QRIS as an important part of the digital economy and finance ecosystem, according to Bank Indonesia, 2025.

What does the latest national data show?

In the third quarter of 2025, Indonesia’s digital-payment transaction volume reached 12.99 billion, growing 38.08% year on year, according to Bank Indonesia, 2025. In the fourth quarter of 2025, digital-payment volume reached 14.26 billion transactions, up 39.21% year on year, according to Bank Indonesia, 2026.

Are small businesses benefiting?

Bank Indonesia reported that 1,655 mentored MSMEs using digital channels increased turnover by 29.9% year on year in the first quarter of 2025. The same release said 2,537 MSMEs were under Bank Indonesia’s mentorship, according to Bank Indonesia, 2025.

Those figures describe mentored businesses rather than all MSMEs in Bali, so they should not be treated as a Bali-wide performance rate. They nevertheless show why payment-system access is relevant to business formalisation, sales collection and the broader local-enterprise economy.

How widespread is QRIS?

Bank Indonesia said QRIS had been adopted by 57 million users and 39.3 million merchants in a July 2025 release, with MSMEs dominating the merchant base. In October 2025, the central bank said approximately 93% of QRIS users were micro, small and medium enterprises, according to Bank Indonesia, 2025.

What does this mean for investors and operators?

The clearest implication is that digital payment capability is part of the operating environment for small enterprises, alongside access to finance and reliable customer demand. Bank Indonesia also reported that MSME financing among its mentored businesses grew 16.8% year on year in the first quarter of 2025, according to Bank Indonesia, 2025.

Bali-specific economic context remains essential. Statistics Indonesia’s Bali office publishes provincial economic releases and the Bali Province in Figures 2025, while Bank Indonesia’s national data provides the payment-system indicators used here, according to Statistics Indonesia, 2025, and Bank Indonesia, 2025.
