Tulamben — A flash flood struck Banjar Dinas Beluhu Kangin in Tulamben village, Kubu district, Karangasem regency, on Dec. 12, 2024, after heavy rain caused water and volcanic material to surge through the area.
The flooding severed the main road and damaged public facilities, including a market, school and bridge. Homes were also heavily damaged, while eight households, representing 35 people, were isolated after the connecting bridge broke.
Flood damage cut access for 35 people in Tulamben
The report was issued by the Bali Provincial Regional Disaster Management Agency, known by its Indonesian acronym BPBD, which said the damage assessment found severe impacts on homes, educational facilities and infrastructure. At SDN 1 Tulamben, a perimeter wall collapsed and teaching materials were damaged.
The flooding followed very heavy rain that began at 2 p.m. WITA (UTC+8), according to the agency. Runoff carried material from the mountain and overwhelmed the drainage system, worsening damage across the affected area.
Emergency work included clearing flood material from the main road with heavy equipment, distributing logistics and recording damage. The response involved Karangasem officials, provincial and regency disaster-response teams, the national road authority's provincial work unit, the regency public works agency, the Tulamben village chief and local residents.
The agency also identified urgent needs including clean water, emergency tents and supplies for mothers and babies. Officials and response teams were coordinating repairs to roads and a temporary bridge so aid could reach affected residents.
