Denpasar — Balai Wilayah Sungai (BWS) Bali-Penida has mapped 1,680.2 hectares in Denpasar City and Badung Regency as potentially affected by flooding as Bali approaches the rainy season expected to begin gradually in November 2026. The findings were reported on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026.

The mapping followed hydraulic analysis of three watersheds: Ayung, Mati and Badung. BWS Bali-Penida is responding with sediment dredging, riverbank repairs and regular inspections of flood-control infrastructure, including pumps and reservoirs.

The Ayung watershed accounts for 754.36 hectares across 28 villages, while the Mati watershed covers 725.11 hectares across 15 villages. The Badung watershed covers 200.73 hectares across nine villages. About 60 percent of the potential inundation area lies near river channels, according to Wayan Riyasa of the agency’s water-resources operations and maintenance unit.

Why the flood map matters to Bali residents and visitors

The areas identified include roads and urban districts used by residents, workers and visitors, including Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Pura Demak in Denpasar, Jalan Dewi Sri in Kuta, Jalan Kunthi in Seminyak, the Dewa Ruci Underpass and Jalan Hasanudin. The mapping does not announce a closure or evacuation order; it identifies places where heavy rain may produce inundation and where flood-control work is being prioritized.

BWS Bali-Penida said dredging along one kilometer of Tukad Badung had been completed, removing 1,600 cubic meters of sediment. Work at Waduk Muara was still under way. Monthly inspections cover the Tukad Mati pump and pump house, mobile pumps and Waduk Muara, while routine maintenance includes clearing vegetation and rubbish from riverbanks.

Planned bank repairs measure 263 meters along Tukad Badung, 131.2 meters along Tukad Mati and 61.5 meters along Tukad Ayung. The agency had proposed Rp 4.326 billion (about US$260,000) to the central government for repairs across the three rivers and said it aimed to complete them before the end of the year. The report also described longer-term plans for the Badung watershed, including work at Bendung Mertagangga and Bendung Batanyuh and an evaluation of flood operations at Waduk Muara Nusa Dua.
