To apply for a Bali visa, most tourists can use Indonesia’s official e-Visa on Arrival system before travel or get a Visa on Arrival at Ngurah Rai airport, while the passport must still meet Indonesia’s six-month validity rule. The official portal says the account is created through the Apply and Register steps, then the visa request is filled in, paid for and granted online.

How do you apply for a Bali visa online?

Indonesia’s official e-Visa site says a visitor must first create an account, then complete data entry, upload documents, verify the email and activate the account before submitting the visa request. After logging in, the applicant enters visa type, arrival information and residence information in Indonesia, then pays and waits for the visa to be granted.

The same official portal says each visitor visa must be submitted through the respective account, which means the application is tied to the traveller’s own login rather than a third-party page. It also says the verification email must be confirmed within one hour.

What documents are required?

The official eVisa FAQ says a passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and for holders of travel documents other than passports, validity must be 12 months. A separate official registration page also asks for a recent colour photo in JPEG, JPG or PNG format with a face-forward pose and a 4 x 6 cm image size at least 400 x 600 pixels.

Independent travel guidance from Virgin Australia says VOA and e-VOA applicants should also have a return or onward flight booking, while the Bali tourism levy is separate from the visa fee. That guide also repeats the six-month passport validity rule for entry.

Can you apply before you fly?

Yes. The official e-Visa site shows the e-VOA can be applied for online before arrival, while travellers can also apply for a Visitor Visa through the same portal. Virgin Australia says the e-VOA should be applied for online before departure rather than through other websites.

Travel guidance from The Honeycombers says there are two common options: paying on arrival or applying and paying online before arrival. In practice, that means travellers who want to avoid the airport queue can complete the online route in advance, provided they use the official Indonesian immigration system.

What happens at the airport?

According to the travel guidance from Virgin Australia, travellers who choose a VOA can obtain it at Bali’s airport on arrival, while e-VOA holders can use the online pre-arrival process. The distinction matters because the airport route and the online route use the same visa category but different application timing.

Trip.com’s guide describes the online process as involving document upload and online payment, then receiving the VOA by email for use on arrival. That matches the official portal’s description that the application is completed through the account and granted after payment.

What should travellers check before applying?

The official Indonesian eVisa portal is the source to use for the application itself, and it says the visitor visa is managed through account registration, document upload, verification and payment. Virgin Australia’s entry guide and the official passport rule together show that the main pre-departure checks are passport validity and travel details that match the trip.

  • Use the official Indonesian eVisa portal for the application.
  • Keep a passport valid for at least 6 months.
  • Have a return or onward flight booking ready.
