Sumbawa — An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck the Sumbawa region of Indonesia on Sunday, Oct. 4, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ.
The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 km. A separate report said the event was offshore and that Indonesia’s earthquake agency found no tsunami threat. The reports did not establish that Malaysia itself faced a tsunami threat.
Why the earthquake matters to Bali and eastern Indonesia
Sumbawa is an island in the Lesser Sunda Islands, in West Nusa Tenggara province. Its location places the event within the wider eastern Indonesian region monitored by national and international earthquake agencies.
For visitors and foreign residents, the immediate significance is that the reports describe an offshore earthquake rather than a land-based event. Bali was not reported as affected, nor were casualties or damage reported in the initial account.
The Indonesian agency cited in the reporting is the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG. The report said its modelling showed that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat. GFZ supplied the magnitude and depth cited in the initial report.
