Canggu — Ngurah Rai Immigration detained four foreign nationals in Canggu on Sept. 24 after a joint operation found three alleged DJs suspected of misusing their immigration permits and a Nigerian woman who had overstayed by 402 days, according to a release dated Oct. 2.

The operation was conducted as part of the Military Police’s Waspada Wira Tombak joint enforcement raid. The three alleged DJs were identified as one Egyptian national, identified by the initials MSI, and two Russian nationals, identified as EZM and AA. The Egyptian national held a Visa on Arrival, while the Russian nationals held a Visa on Arrival and an Investor Limited Stay Permit, respectively.

Why the Canggu detentions matter to foreign visitors

For foreign nationals in Indonesia, immigration status is tied to the activities permitted under a visa or stay permit. The case illustrates that performing as a DJ may be treated as a possible misuse of stay permission when the person holds a visitor or investor-related permit rather than authorization corresponding to the reported activity. The fourth detainee, a Nigerian woman identified by the initials PGA, was held over an overstay of 402 days.

The Directorate General of Immigration, the Indonesian agency responsible for immigration administration and enforcement, said the four detainees remained at Ngurah Rai Immigration for further examination of their stay permits and immigration documents. The operation also involved the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration, the National Narcotics Agency, Military Police Detachment, the Civil Service Police Unit and Denpasar Police.

The immigration release is dated Oct. 2, but says the Canggu operation took place on Thursday night, Sept. 24. It does not state the final administrative or legal outcome for any of the four detainees.
