Canggu — The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office detained three foreign nationals suspected of working as DJs while using residence permits for other purposes during an operation in Canggu on Sept. 24. Officers also detained a Nigerian woman accused of overstaying by 402 days.
The Directorate General of Immigration’s Oct. 2 release said the three suspected DJs were one Egyptian national identified by the initials MSI and two Russian nationals identified as EZM and AA. Their permits included visas on arrival and an investor temporary residence permit. The Nigerian national was identified as PGA.
All four remained under examination at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office over their permits and immigration documents. The official account did not announce a final decision on deportation, detention or other immigration measures.
Why the Canggu operation matters to foreign visitors and residents
Indonesia’s immigration rules tie a foreign national’s permitted activities to the type and purpose of the stay permit. In practical terms, a permit issued for visiting or investment does not automatically authorize paid entertainment work. Performing as a DJ can therefore prompt an immigration inquiry when officers allege that the activity falls outside the permit’s purpose.
The case also illustrates the separate consequences of overstaying. A person who remains in Indonesia beyond the authorized period can face immigration enforcement while authorities verify the person’s documents and circumstances. The release gave no indication that PGA’s case had been finally resolved.
The operation was conducted as part of a joint enforcement effort involving immigration authorities and other agencies. The four foreign nationals were taken to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office for further examination, according to the official release and reports on the operation.
