Lombok — Indonesia had not formally approved an extension of the Mandalika MotoGP contract after the 2026 season, even as Dorna Sports said it planned to remain involved at least through 2031.

The current agreement began in 2022 and reaches the end of its first five-year period in 2026. Indonesian officials said a decision on the next period still required direction from President Prabowo Subianto, while the government evaluated the 2026 event and the terms of a possible continuation.

Why it matters for Lombok

Mandalika is a major international event for Lombok and a prominent part of Indonesia’s sports-tourism strategy. A continued race would preserve the circuit’s place on the MotoGP calendar and support the government’s effort to use large sporting events to attract visitors and economic activity to West Nusa Tenggara.

For visitors, Dorna’s stated intention to continue does not by itself establish that future Indonesian races are guaranteed. The unresolved government approval means the post-2026 status of the event remained subject to an official decision. Discussions involved the Ministry of Youth and Sports, InJourney, Danantara Indonesia and Dorna, including the financial terms known as the hosting fee.

Dorna Deputy Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ezpeleta said the organization had a five-year agreement with an option for another five years and planned to remain in Indonesia at least until 2031. Indonesian officials, however, continued to describe the extension as awaiting presidential direction and formal agreement.

The first Mandalika MotoGP contract covered the 2022–2026 period. The proposed next phase would cover 2027–2031, but Indonesia had not completed the approval process.
