Sumbawa — The confirmed death toll reached three by Oct. 15 after four tourists were swept away while swimming at Batu Pampang Beach in Sumbawa on Oct. 14. One 19-year-old tourist, identified as MKR from Ponorogo, remained missing, with the search scheduled to resume on Oct. 16.
The incident occurred in Emang Lestari village, Lunyuk subdistrict, Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, at about 8:45 a.m. The first victim, a tourist from Sulawesi, was found dead during the first day of the operation. Two more victims, MY, 19, from Tangerang, and MZ, 19, from Palembang, were found dead on Oct. 15 after being reported ashore at Kuang Dingin Beach, about 3 nautical miles from the incident site.
Why the Sumbawa incident matters to visitors
The deaths underscore the danger of strong currents at beaches outside supervised swimming areas. The search operation involved the Sumbawa Search and Rescue Post, Alas precinct police, the Sumbawa Water Police, Labupadi Naval Post and local residents. Visitors at Batu Pampang Beach and similar coastal sites were urged to follow warning signs and avoid swimming where currents or waves are strong.
The operation was temporarily suspended on the afternoon of Oct. 15. Search teams were scheduled to return on Friday, Oct. 16, to look for MKR, the remaining missing tourist. The reports identify all four victims as 19-year-old tourists who were swept away during the morning incident.
