Amlapura — On Nov. 1, 2026, Karangasem’s Environment Agency reported that organic waste at Linggasana landfill in Buana Giri, Bebandem, was being shredded, fermented and directed into organic fertilizer.
The agency, known in Indonesia as the Dinas Lingkungan Hidup, said waste was sorted before processing, with plastic separated from organic material. The organic portion was then fed into a shredding machine, creating material for the next stage of treatment.
According to agency head I Wayan Wiguna, the shredded material is mixed with cow manure each month and fermented until it can be used as organic fertilizer. The process is intended to give organic waste a productive use rather than leave it accumulating at the landfill.
Why Linggasana’s waste sorting matters
For residents and visitors in Karangasem, the report highlights a practical consequence of waste separation: organic material is easier to process when it has not been mixed with plastic and other inorganic waste. Once contaminated, it requires additional handling before it can be turned into compost or fertilizer.
The landfill is in Buana Giri village, in Bebandem district, Karangasem Regency. The agency said separating waste at its source would make treatment at Linggasana more effective and help reduce the amount of organic waste ending up as landfill residue.
The reported method combines mechanical shredding with fermentation. The resulting fertilizer is intended for use by the community, according to the agency’s account. The reports do not state a production volume or a completion date for the process.
