Kupang — Police in East Nusa Tenggara said they had thwarted the suspected smuggling of two foreign nationals from India and Sri Lanka toward Australia on Sept. 21, 2026. Investigators said the suspected journey passed through Sape in West Nusa Tenggara, Aimere in Flores, Kupang and Rote Ndao before its intended destination.

The operation involved the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, known as Polda NTT, and the KP3 Laut Bolok police sector, which handles security at the Bolok port area. Police also detained an Indonesian national identified by the initials DEL, or P, whom they described as a suspected field guide. The two foreign nationals remained under intensive examination, with an interpreter assisting the process.

The route puts Indonesia’s southern maritime border in focus

For foreign residents and visitors, the case illustrates that movement through eastern Indonesian ports and islands can involve scrutiny when authorities suspect an attempt to leave the country outside normal immigration and maritime procedures. The police account concerns an alleged smuggling operation, not a new travel rule or a general restriction on foreign nationals.

According to police, the suspected route began in Sape, in West Nusa Tenggara, continued to Aimere in Flores and Kupang, and then proceeded toward Rote Ndao. Rote Ndao lies near Indonesia’s southern maritime boundary and is a frequent focus of law-enforcement operations involving suspected crossings toward Australia.

Police said the investigation also examined whether another person, identified by the initial R, had financed the journey. The account did not establish the two foreign nationals’ legal status or state that they had been charged. It said their examination was continuing while authorities investigated possible involvement in an international people-smuggling network.

The Indonesian suspect was reported to have been placed in detention beginning Sept. 21, 2026, for 20 days, through Oct. 10, 2026, at the East Nusa Tenggara police detention facility in Kupang. The reports did not state the eventual outcome of the investigation or any action taken against the two foreign nationals.
