Ubud — A PLN electricity substation on Jalan Raya Monkey Forest short-circuited on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, sending thick smoke into a tourist area in Gianyar and alarming nearby residents.

Firefighters from the Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service responded after a resident reported the incident. The team treated the substation with a portable fire extinguisher, and the situation returned to normal after about five minutes. No deaths or injuries were reported.

PLN, Indonesia’s state electricity company, said a short circuit occurred in a connecting cable and that its personnel had handled the problem. The company was still investigating the underlying cause. Reports also said that electrical and communications cables occupied the same area, while PLN clarified that not every cable there belonged to the company.

Why the Ubud substation incident matters to visitors

Jalan Raya Monkey Forest runs through one of Ubud’s busiest tourism areas, so smoke or an electrical incident there can cause immediate concern for visitors, businesses and residents even when the disruption is contained. The reports did not state that the Monkey Forest attraction closed or that tourism services were suspended.

For foreign residents and visitors, the incident means that a visible emergency in the area was handled locally without reported casualties. It also highlights that the cause was not presented as fully resolved: PLN had addressed the short circuit, but its investigation into the cause was continuing.

The Gianyar fire service said it received the report at 10:00 WITA (UTC+8). Firefighters then went to the location and used an extinguisher. PLN’s local manager confirmed that the immediate fault involved a shorted connecting cable.
