Gianyar — The Gianyar Police Sector, Indonesian military personnel and residents cleared plastic waste, branches, wood and other material obstructing a river near Pura Demungan in Lebih on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.

The cleanup followed flooding concerns linked to extreme weather and heavy rain. The work was carried out as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of the river overflowing into nearby homes.

Why it matters to Bali residents and visitors

For people living in or visiting Gianyar, the operation highlights how blocked waterways can increase disruption during intense rain. The affected area is in Banjar Lebih Beten Kelod, Desa Lebih, in Gianyar district. The river had previously been obstructed by accumulated waste, tree branches, cut wood, sediment and a narrowed channel.

The operation was conducted under the Green Policing program and involved the Gianyar Police Sector, military personnel, the Gianyar Water and Air Police Unit, village officials, Babinsa personnel and local residents. Kompol I Made Adi Suryawan, the Gianyar police chief, led the activity.

Participants first held a readiness briefing before removing plastic waste and other material from the channel. Branches and pieces of wood were taken away to restore the flow of water. The Gianyar district disaster-management agency later transported the collected material for further handling.

The cleanup also reflected an earlier pattern of flooding in the area. The river had overflowed during a previous rainy season, inundating nearby residential areas. Local residents welcomed the operation and expressed hope that similar work would continue.
