Denpasar — Bali welcomed just over 697,800 direct foreign tourist arrivals in July 2026, a modest increase on the previous year and part of a broader recovery that has brought total international visits to about 3.92 million for the first seven months of the year, according to provincial tourism officials citing Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data.
Figures released by the Bali Provincial Tourism Office at the end of August show 3,923,824 foreign tourist arrivals for January–July 2026, based on data compiled from BPS Bali. The same period in 2025 recorded around 3.98 million foreign arrivals, indicating that this year’s cumulative total remains slightly lower than last year.
Provincial tourism officials described the overall performance in 2026 as “quite stable” compared with 2025, with an increase of about 0.1 percent once domestic tourism is included, reflecting resilience despite external pressures such as higher airfares and a prolonged dry season.
July 2026 arrivals and source markets
BPS Bali data cited in several reports indicate that foreign tourist arrivals to Bali reached 697,809 in July 2026. July arrivals were up 15.34 percent from June 2026, when the island received around 604,962 foreign visitors. The vast majority of July’s arrivals entered through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, which handled 697,800 foreign arrivals, while only nine visitors arrived via seaports such as Benoa, Padangbai and Celukan Bawang.
According to the head of BPS Bali, Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, Europe was Bali’s largest regional source of foreign visitors in July, supplying 200,182 arrivals. Oceania followed with 195,481 visitors, while Asia contributed 182,326 arrivals, although arrivals from Southeast Asia fell 17.01 percent to 55,248.
Multiple reports citing BPS data indicate that Australia was the leading national source market for Bali in 2026, with 982,403 arrivals in the January–July period. China ranked second with 346,384 arrivals, followed by India (318,948), the United Kingdom (170,814) and South Korea (164,846). The United States, France, Russia, Malaysia and Japan also remained among Bali’s top ten foreign markets in the first seven months of the year.
Local tourism authorities say the strong European and Australian presence in July reflects the northern hemisphere summer holiday period and school breaks in key markets, which typically support higher demand during Bali’s peak season.
Hotel occupancy trends
National BPS data show that Bali recorded the highest occupancy rate among Indonesia’s star-rated hotels in July 2026. One report citing BPS placed the island’s star-hotel room occupancy at 64.29 percent, ahead of Banten and Yogyakarta. Another outlet, also drawing on BPS figures, reported a July occupancy rate of 67.29 percent, underscoring Bali’s leading position in the national hotel market.
Earlier in the year, BPS Bali noted an unusual divergence between visitor numbers and accommodation performance: foreign arrivals fell 1.11 percent year on year in the January–April 2026 period, while star-hotel occupancy edged up by 0.71 percentage points. This pattern suggests that, even when international arrivals soften, visitors staying in higher-category hotels can sustain room demand.
Industry analysts say the strong hotel occupancy in July points to healthy accommodation demand during the mid-year holiday period and supports expectations of continued tourism activity into August and September, traditionally among Bali’s busiest months.
Outlook for the rest of 2026
The cumulative foreign-arrival total of 3.92 million through July, slightly below the 2025 comparison, indicates that Bali’s tourism recovery in 2026 remains gradual. Provincial officials have expressed cautious optimism that sustained demand from major markets, combined with relatively high hotel occupancy, will help support the sector through the remainder of the year, provided external conditions such as air connectivity and regional geopolitics remain stable.
