Denpasar — Bali Hindus will observe Saraswati Day on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, a sacred observance dedicated to knowledge, learning and wisdom across Bali.
The observance follows the Balinese Pawukon calendar, which repeats every 210 days. Prayers and offerings are commonly held at homes, schools, universities, libraries, temples and other places associated with learning, rather than at one centralized public venue.
Why Saraswati Day matters to visitors in Bali
For foreign residents and visitors, Saraswati Day is a religious observance rather than a scheduled public festival. Ceremonies may take place in schools, campuses, family compounds and temples, but access is not automatically open to visitors. The day does not have a single island-wide program or fixed timetable.
Books, sacred texts, musical instruments and other objects associated with knowledge may be placed beside offerings during prayers. The observance honors Dewi Saraswati, the Balinese Hindu figure associated with learning, wisdom and the arts. In some communities, books and other blessed materials are left undisturbed after the rituals, and people may refrain from reading or writing for part of the day.
The date is the second Saraswati Day observance in 2026; the first fell on April 4. The October observance is held on Saniscara Umanis of Wuku Watugunung, combining the Saturday and five-day calendar cycles. The scale and form of ceremonies depend on each family, institution or local community.
Schools and educational institutions commonly organize prayers, while temples and family shrines may conduct their own ceremonies. No single visitor admission system, island-wide timetable or central venue has been announced.
