Denpasar to Ubud — is a short Bali journey, but the exact time and best option depend on where in Denpasar you start and whether you are coming from the airport or the city. For most travellers, the trip takes about 1 to 2 hours by road, and the cheapest public option is the Trans Metro Dewata route to the Monkey Forest area, according to Wikivoyage and The Ridge Bali.

How far is Denpasar from Ubud?

Different route planners give different distances because they measure different start points. Rome2Rio lists the straight-line distance between Denpasar and Ubud at 29 km, while the road distance is 23.1 km. For Denpasar Airport to Ubud, Traveloka says the distance is about 35 to 40 kilometres, and 12Go gives 42 km.

That spread is important because “Denpasar to Ubud” can mean the city centre, the airport, or nearby suburbs such as Sanur or Kuta.

How long does the trip take?

On the road, the journey is usually about 1 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and the exact starting point, according to Rome2Rio, Traveloka and Virgin Australia. Traveloka says the airport-to-Ubud transfer typically takes 60 to 90 minutes under normal conditions.

Other route pages quote shorter times for ideal traffic. Rome2Rio lists 23 minutes for driving from Denpasar to Ubud, but that is based on its road-distance estimate and assumes a fast run without traffic. In practice, Bali congestion makes travel times less predictable than the distance alone suggests.

What is the cheapest public transport?

Wikivoyage says Bali’s public bus network, Trans Metro Dewata, runs Route 4 between Terminal Ubung in Denpasar and Monkey Forest Central Parking in Ubud, and it lists the fare at Rp4,400 in 2026. The Ridge Bali also identifies Trans Metro Dewata as the cheapest option from Denpasar to Ubud and says it connects directly to the Monkey Forest area.

Wikivoyage adds that regular public bemos run from Denpasar’s Batubulan terminal to Ubud and cost around Rp50,000, taking about an hour. For travellers prioritising convenience, Traveloka says a pre-booked private transfer is the most reliable and stress-free airport option.

Which route should travellers expect?

There is no single fixed route for every trip. Some services go from Denpasar city via Batubulan or Terminal Ubung, while airport trips are longer and often run through south or east Bali roads before reaching Ubud.

That is why route planners and travel guides give a range rather than one exact figure. The same search term can describe a local hop, an airport transfer, or a hotel-to-hotel trip, and each version has a different distance and time.

What does this mean for visitors?

If you are arriving from Denpasar Airport, plan for around 60 to 90 minutes and expect traffic to matter more than the map distance. If you are already in Denpasar city, the trip can be much shorter, especially if you use the Trans Metro Dewata route or travel outside peak hours.

For readers searching “Denpasar to Ubud,” the practical answer is simple: the route is close enough for a day transfer, but long enough that traffic, pickup point and transport mode can change the experience significantly.
