Lombok — A 28-year-old Dutch tourist injured her leg while hiking near Batu Beleq on the Sembalun route of Mount Rinjani in East Lombok on Thursday morning, Oct. 22, 2026. The injury left her unable to stand and in need of immediate medical care, according to Astekita Ardiaristo, head of administrative affairs at Mount Rinjani National Park.
The park authority received the report at 7:27 a.m. WITA (UTC+8) and coordinated an air evacuation with relevant parties. A helicopter lifted the tourist at about 12:25 p.m. WITA and flew her to a heliport in Benoa. She was then referred to a hospital for treatment. The evacuation was arranged under the tourist’s premium insurance.
Why the evacuation matters for Rinjani visitors
Mount Rinjani’s Sembalun route is a remote, high-altitude hiking area where a leg injury can quickly make a self-guided descent impossible. In this case, the park authority treated the inability to stand and the need for urgent medical attention as grounds for air evacuation rather than a routine trek out.
For foreign visitors, the incident shows the practical role of travel insurance in a national-park emergency. The helicopter transfer was linked to the injured tourist’s premium insurance, while the park authority coordinated the response.
The evacuation ended the immediate rescue phase in Lombok: the tourist was flown to Benoa and referred onward for medical care.
