Fire Guts Seminyak’s Chez Gado-Gado; Losses Put At Rp4 Billion

Seminyak — — A major fire gutted the Chez Gado-Gado beachfront restaurant on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak on Sunday evening, 30 August 2026, with police and local officials estimating material losses at around Rp4 billion and confirming there were no fatalities, according to Detik and Tribun Bali. The blaze broke out shortly after 7:30 p.m. WITA while the venue was busy with diners and a birthday celebration.

Local media and tourism outlets describe Chez Gado-Gado as a long-established beachside dining venue overlooking Double Six Beach that has been popular with visitors and residents for more than three decades. The main restaurant structure, measuring roughly 45 by 40 metres and built with a traditional alang-alang thatched roof, was completely destroyed. Officials from the Badung Fire and Rescue Service (Damkar) reported that an adjacent office building on the south side was saved, with assets there valued at about Rp700 million.

Fire response and damage

According to Detik and statements relayed by Damkar, the fire was reported at around 7:30–7:40 p.m. WITA on 30 August. Firefighters deployed about 10 fire engines and needed more than two hours, and up to 2 hours 40 minutes in some accounts, to bring the blaze under control.

Authorities estimate temporary material losses at approximately Rp4 billion, based on assessments cited by Detik, Tribun Bali and regional tourism media. Images and video published by local and international outlets show the restaurant reduced to a charred shell, with four motorcycles also damaged in the incident.

Police and fire officials have stated that no deaths were recorded, and local reports say there were no serious injuries among guests. One staff member suffered burns to a hand, according to Australian broadcaster Nine.

Witness accounts and suspected cause

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by Denpasar Police and forensic teams, but police spokespeople have outlined a working hypothesis based on witness testimony. The Head of Public Relations for Denpasar Police, First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, told local media that the blaze is strongly suspected to have started when a balloon used as decoration for a customer’s birthday celebration was hit by a candle flame, igniting and then setting fire to the thatched roof.

Regional tourism site Visit Gilis, citing police and witness statements, reports that the balloon was believed to be filled with flammable gas, possibly hydrogen, which is sometimes used as a cheaper alternative to helium in Bali. International outlets including AsiaOne and WION likewise attribute the preliminary findings to Bali police, stating that party balloons filled with flammable gas for the celebration ignited and triggered the blaze. Investigations into the cause were ongoing as of early September 2026.

Evacuation and safety concerns

Local and international coverage indicates that diners and staff evacuated rapidly as flames spread across the roof and interior. Witnesses quoted by foreign media described guests fleeing through limited exits, with staff attempting to control the fire before being forced to abandon the effort.

The incident has prompted renewed attention to fire safety at Bali’s beachside venues, particularly those using traditional thatched roofing and hosting large events. Reports note that emergency services in Bali can be reached via national police hotlines, and authorities have urged businesses and residents to review fire prevention and evacuation procedures during the dry season.

Chez Gado-Gado’s operators have stated on their website that the restaurant is temporarily closed following the fire, with rebuilding and investigative processes expected to continue into the coming months.
