Denpasar — Garuda Indonesia is operating a four-times-weekly Jakarta–Denpasar–Timika–Jayapura service using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, positioning Bali as a key transit point between the capital and Papua, according to airline and schedule data for 2026.
The route, marketed as connectivity between Denpasar and Jayapura via Timika, combines sectors from Jakarta through Bali to Papua rather than a standalone Bali–Papua flight. Flight-tracking and schedule sites list GA-652 as operating from Jakarta to Denpasar, then onward from Denpasar to Timika and Timika to Jayapura with consistent timings and equipment.
According to an April 2026 report on Garuda’s network, the airline has promoted Bali as a hub for eastern Indonesia, including Papua, by opening connectivity on the Jakarta–Denpasar–Timika–Jayapura routing. The report notes four weekly departures from Jakarta — on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays — operated with Boeing 737-800NG aircraft configured with 12 business-class and 150 economy-class seats, for a total of 162 seats.
Route pattern and timings
On published schedules, outbound flight GA-652 departs Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 21:25 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), arriving at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar at 00:20 Central Indonesian Time (WITA) the following day.
The same flight is then listed as leaving Denpasar at 01:05 WITA for Timika, arriving at Mozes Kilangin Airport at 05:45 Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT). Subsequent schedules and route information show a sector from Timika to Jayapura arriving at Sentani Airport at 07:55 WIT, completing the through service.
The published pattern therefore gives passengers a same-service connection linking Jakarta, Bali, Timika and Jayapura, with Bali functioning as an intermediate stop and transfer point.
Return service
Garuda’s return service on this routing is marketed as GA-653 from Jayapura back to Jakarta via Timika and Denpasar. The detailed operating days for GA-653 vary in publicly available schedule information, but the April 2026 report describes departures from Jayapura four times a week — on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays — with the flight travelling via Timika and Denpasar before reaching Jakarta.
Additional flight-status and timetable data confirm that GA-652 and related sectors continue to be scheduled in mid-2026, with the Denpasar–Timika leg listed at 01:05 and the Timika–Jayapura sector at around 06:35–07:55. These sources show the routing in regular operation rather than as a one-off charter.
Bali’s emerging hub role
In its public statements on the route, Garuda has described an eastern Indonesia strategy that places Denpasar between Indonesia’s main western gateway and destinations in Papua. By offering a same-service itinerary from Jakarta through Bali to Timika and Jayapura, the airline is using Ngurah Rai International Airport as a transit point for passengers travelling between Papua, Bali and other domestic or international flights.
The April 2026 coverage of the route emphasised that positioning Bali as a hub is meant to support economic activity and tourism by improving air access to eastern Indonesia, including Papua. However, the available material focuses on the Jakarta–Denpasar–Timika–Jayapura operation; it does not list specific new international routes, frequencies or aircraft tied to the hub concept.
Separate schedule and route-map information from Garuda and independent flight-data platforms confirm that Jayapura and Timika remain part of the airline’s domestic network, with direct Timika–Jayapura services also offered alongside the multi-sector GA-652/GA-653 itinerary. For passengers, this means Bali can function as an additional transfer point on journeys to and from Papua, complementing other routings via cities such as Makassar.
As of mid-2026, multiple independent sources show the Jakarta–Denpasar–Timika–Jayapura pattern and the use of Boeing 737-800 aircraft with business and economy cabins, supporting Garuda’s stated aim of strengthening Bali’s role in connecting eastern Indonesia to national and international markets.
