Gilimanuk ferry link connects Bali and Java via ASDP crossing

Gilimanuk — — Gilimanuk Bay is Bali’s western ferry gateway to Java, linking Bali’s Jembrana regency with Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, East Java, across the Bali Strait. The route is managed by ASDP Indonesia Ferry, according to the Bali Provincial Tourism Office.

For travellers, the crossing is the main overland alternative to flying between Bali and East Java. The provincial tourism office says the bay sits in Gilimanuk sub-district, Melaya district, Jembrana regency, on Bali’s west coast.

What travellers should know

Local travel guides describe the Gilimanuk–Ketapang ferry as a round-the-clock service, with departures through the day and night and a crossing time of about one hour. One guide says ferries can run as often as every 15 to 60 minutes, depending on demand and conditions.

Recent reports from local media also show the route remains heavily used and subject to queue management. On Sept. 6, 2026, local reports said ASDP deployed extra vessels to reduce congestion on the Ketapang–Gilimanuk crossing.

Travellers should allow extra time during busy periods, and check conditions before departure, because ferry operations on the Bali Strait can be adjusted when weather or traffic conditions change.

A key land bridge between Bali and Java

The Gilimanuk crossing is important not only for tourists, but also for residents, buses, trucks and freight moving between Bali and Java.
