Denpasar — Police arrested Dodi Andika, 25, from Lampung, after he allegedly stole a mobile phone from patient companion I Gede Agus at Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar, Bali. The arrest was reported on Oct. 2, 2026, after investigators used hospital CCTV to identify and locate him.
The theft occurred on Sept. 25, 2026, in the hospital’s Integrated Cardiac Services Room, where Agus had fallen asleep while waiting for a patient. The phone, a Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G, was valued at about IDR 5 million (about US$313). Reports said police arrested Andika at Simpang Buagan in Denpasar on Sept. 29 and recovered the phone.
Why the arrest matters to visitors and foreign residents
The case illustrates how a theft report in an Indonesian hospital can proceed from CCTV review to police identification and arrest. For foreign visitors and residents, the practical point is that hospitals are public places where personal belongings remain vulnerable while patients or companions sleep, wait or move between treatment areas. The reports do not indicate that foreign nationals were involved or that the hospital introduced a new security rule.
Police said Andika admitted taking the phone alone. The case was handled by the Denpasar Barat Police Criminal Investigation Unit, with officers examining the scene, witness statements and surveillance footage. The suspect and evidence were held at the Denpasar Barat Police station for further legal proceedings.
Under the charge described in the reports, Andika faces a maximum prison sentence of five years. The reports said police were continuing to examine the theft case at Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital.
