Sanur — Sanur developed from a community of fishermen and farmers into a major tourism destination, with the opening of Bali Beach Hotel in 1966 marking an early milestone in modern tourism on Bali’s southeast coast.

The change came as Indonesia pursued a larger role in international tourism during the era of President Sukarno. Bali Beach Hotel, later known as Inna Grand Bali Beach, was built in Sanur and opened in 1966 as Bali’s first five-star hotel, according to reports by detikcom, Sarasvati and other publications.

Sanur’s tourism history explains its international profile

For foreign visitors and residents, Sanur’s present-day hotel, restaurant and resort landscape is the result of a development process that began before the area became a mature international destination. The coastal settlement was previously associated with fishing, farming and community religious life. The arrival of a large, internationally oriented hotel changed the scale and direction of development.

Reports identify the hotel as a project connected to President Sukarno’s tourism vision. Sarasvati reported that the hotel was inaugurated on Nov. 1, 1966, while other accounts describe its opening in November 1966. Detikcom said hotels, resorts and restaurants began appearing more widely in Sanur and elsewhere in Bali in the early 1970s.

The hotel’s construction also became part of a wider discussion about the character of Bali’s built environment. Later reporting said its height helped prompt restrictions on future buildings, reflecting concerns that rapid tourism development could alter the island’s landscape.

Sanur’s transformation was therefore not a single event but a gradual shift from a coastal village economy toward an international tourism market. The 1966 hotel remains the clearest early marker identified in the reports, while the expansion of accommodation and dining businesses in the 1970s established the pattern that shaped Sanur’s subsequent growth.
