Anak Krakatau’s Eruption Does Not Signal a Bali Mega-Quake
Local disaster officials and Indonesian geological experts say Anak Krakatau’s early September eruption and a high count of small tremors around Bali do not, by themselves, indicate that a mega-earthquake is imminent.

Denpasar — — Anak Krakatau’s early September eruption has fuelled online talk of a looming mega-earthquake for Bali, but available assessments from Indonesia’s geological and meteorological agencies and local experts do not support claims that the eruption signals a large tectonic quake in Bali.
The concern arose after Anak Krakatau experienced a prolonged "continuous" eruption episode from the late hours of 4 September 2026 until around midnight on 6 September 2026, lasting about 25 hours according to Indonesia’s Geological Agency (PVMBG). The agency reported that the volcano’s alert status remained at Level III (Siaga) and warned people not to approach within a 3 km radius of the crater, but did not link the activity to an imminent mega-earthquake.
An explainer published on 10 September by Bali.live addressed fears that the Krakatau eruption could trigger a major quake affecting Bali. The article cited data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showing 852 earthquakes recorded in and around Bali during the first eight months of 2026, and quoted the head of the Bali Provincial Disaster Management Agency, I Gede Teja, saying residents should not equate volcanic eruptions with tectonic earthquakes.
Volcanic tremors and tectonic quakes
Seismologists and volcanologists distinguish volcanic earthquakes, which are driven by magma movement and pressure changes inside a volcano, from tectonic earthquakes, which arise from fault movement, including along subduction zones where one tectonic plate dives beneath another. Bali.live’s explainer emphasised that Anak Krakatau’s seismic signals are primarily volcanic and that these are different from the tectonic processes that could generate a large earthquake south of Bali.
The same piece noted that Bali lies between major sources of tectonic hazard: the subduction zone to the south of the island and the Flores Backarc Thrust system to the north. That geography makes Bali part of a seismically active region, but the publication stressed that the recorded swarm of small earthquakes in 2026 did not prove a large quake was imminent.
According to Bali.live’s account of BMKG data, most of the 852 earthquakes recorded around Bali between January and August 2026 were minor, with magnitudes below 3.0. The article reported that none of the events in that period reached magnitude 5.0, and quoted Teja saying that a high count of small tremors is not, by itself, a forecast of a strong earthquake.
Simultaneous eruptions across Indonesia
Public anxiety in Indonesia has also been driven by reports that several volcanoes were active in early September. A separate analysis by VOI on 13 September described simultaneous activity at Anak Krakatau and other volcanoes including Semeru, Ili Lewotolok, Ibu, Lewotobi Laki-laki and Sinabung, and asked whether the eruptions were connected.
VOI cited the Geological Agency and academics from Gadjah Mada University who said Indonesia had 11 erupting active volcanoes during 2026, five at Alert Level III and six at Alert Level II. Each volcano was described as having its own magma system and cycle, and the overlap in activity was attributed to timing rather than a single triggering mechanism.
Rita Susilawati, head of the Geological Agency’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, was quoted as saying the agency had found no evidence of one geological process causing all of the eruptions at once, adding that with at least 127 active volcanoes nationwide, periods of overlapping eruptions are to be expected.
The same VOI report noted that under certain conditions an earthquake can influence a nearby volcano, citing increased seismicity at Lewotolok and Lewotobi Laki-laki following an earthquake near Flores. However, it said that example did not explain every eruption recorded in September.
What residents are advised to follow
Bali.live reported that Bali’s own active volcanoes—Mount Agung in Karangasem and Mount Batur in Bangli—remained at normal status at the time of publication, with no increase in volcanic activity reported by the provincial disaster agency.
PVMBG and BMKG have focused their advisories on areas directly affected by Anak Krakatau’s ash and seismic activity. The Geological Agency said the continuous eruption episode ended in the early hours of 6 September but maintained the Siaga alert level, and BMKG reported tracking ash dispersal over parts of Java and Sumatra while stating that sea-level sensors in the Sunda Strait did not detect a tsunami and no tsunami warning was issued.
Experts cited by Bali.live and VOI therefore recommend that residents rely on official information from BMKG, the Geological Agency and local disaster management offices, rather than social media speculation. The material reviewed for this article does not include any official forecast of a mega-earthquake in Bali linked to Anak Krakatau’s eruption.

Anak Krakatau’s lava fountain and ash plume were widely shared on social media during and after the 4–6 September eruption, prompting commentary that connected the spectacle to broader fears of a major quake along the subduction zone south of Bali.
Bali.live’s explainer on 10 September sought to separate viral claims from official assessments of Bali’s seismic risk, while VOI’s 13 September article examined whether simultaneous eruptions across Indonesia reflected a single underlying process. Both reports concluded that current evidence does not show Anak Krakatau’s activity triggering a mega-earthquake threat to Bali.
