Badung Turns 2026 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Into Sport Tourism Showcase

Badung — — Badung Regency is using the 23rd Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang as a flagship sport tourism event, with 24 invited surfers competing at Padang Padang Beach in Pecatu over a waiting period from 1 to 31 August 2026, according to the regency administration and event organisers.

Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa officially opened the competition at Padang Padang (Labuan Sait) Beach on Saturday, 1 August 2026, framing the event as part of the regency’s push to attract more visitors through international sporting activities during the peak holiday season.

The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang is run on an “It’s On When It’s On” basis, with organisers waiting for a day of optimal swell within the August window rather than fixing competition dates in advance.

International field and local talent

Event organisers and local media report that the 2026 edition brings together a field of 24 invited surfers, made up of 12 Indonesian athletes and 12 international competitors.

The invitation list published by specialised surfing outlets includes top Indonesian surfers such as Westen Hirst, Ketut Agus, Rajo Saputra and Made Adi Putra, alongside international names including Taj Burrow, Bruce Irons, Mason Ho and Sky Brown.

Sport tourism and access plans

Badung’s government links its support for the Rip Curl Cup with a broader strategy to build sport tourism around international events and improve access to southern Bukit Peninsula beaches.

As part of that strategy, the regency has started work on a new section of the South Ring Road connecting Labuan Sait and Jimbaran, with a planned length of more than 10 kilometres and a carriageway width of 24 metres.

According to the regent and public works officials, the project is intended to ease congestion around Labuan Sait and provide more orderly, comfortable and safe access to tourism areas including Pecatu and Uluwatu, with full completion of the Jimbaran–Uluwatu corridor targeted by the end of 2027.
