Denpasar — On Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, the Bali Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) is studying living costs and employers’ ability to pay as input for setting Bali’s 2027 provincial minimum wage, amid demands from students and labor unions for Rp5.2 million (about US$150) per month.

The study is intended to inform the governor, not set the wage itself. BRIDA official Wica said the research would assess kebutuhan hidup layak, or decent-living needs, alongside businesses’ capacity to pay. The agency will submit its findings to the Bali governor, who has the authority to formulate the policy.

Why Bali’s wage review matters to foreign residents

The review could affect employers and workers in Bali, including businesses in tourism and hospitality that employ foreign residents or work alongside them. It does not create a new wage immediately: the 2027 amount remains undecided while the research and formal wage-setting process continue.

The Rp5.2 million (about US$150) demand was raised by students and labor unions during a demonstration at Lapangan Puputan Margarana, Renon, Denpasar, on Oct. 21. BRIDA said it could not determine whether that figure matched Bali’s decent-living needs before the research and analysis were complete.

The research is being conducted alongside discussion through the Bali Provincial Wage Council, with consideration given to workers’ demands and business conditions. Separate reporting said an initial simulation under the applicable wage formula would produce an increase of about Rp200,000 (about US$12), placing the provincial wage at roughly Rp3.4 million (about US$104), but that figure is not a final decision.

The next step is completion of the BRIDA study and submission of its conclusions to the governor. The final 2027 provincial minimum wage must still pass through the applicable legal mechanism.
