Denpasar — Ten children with dual nationality were sworn in as Indonesian citizens in Denpasar on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, by the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law.
The ceremony followed a presidential decision on citizenship applications for children with dual nationality under Indonesian law. I Gusti Putu Milawati, head of the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, said the oath marked more than an administrative step: It formalized the children’s rights and obligations as Indonesian citizens.
The children were told to return any foreign immigration documents they held, report the change in citizenship status to the relevant foreign authorities and submit proof of that report to the Bali office. For foreign parents and other residents, the practical effect is that a child who completes this process is no longer treated as holding the foreign immigration documentation covered by the instruction; the change must also be reported to the foreign country concerned.
Why the ceremony matters for foreign families
Indonesia permits limited dual nationality for certain children, but the oath ceremony completes the transition for those who choose Indonesian citizenship under the applicable process. The Bali office said it would continue providing citizenship services in accordance with the law and supporting professional, accountable and fair enforcement.
The ceremony therefore links citizenship status to documents and reporting duties. Affected families must coordinate the surrender of foreign immigration documents with notification to the relevant foreign representatives, then provide evidence of that notification to the Indonesian authorities. The report does not identify the children or specify their former nationalities.
