Labuan Bajo — A magnitude 4,7 earthquake shook Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, at 17.13 WITA on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, with tremors felt in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai and other parts of the province. Patients on the second floor of Siloam Hospital Labuan Bajo were startled, and one briefly considered leaving the room.
A magnitude 4,7 earthquake was reported amid continued seismic activity in Flores. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, known as BMKG, placed the epicenter 40 kilometers north of Ruteng, Manggarai, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake occurred at 17:13:09 WIB and recorded intensity II-III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale in Manggarai.
Why the Flores earthquake matters to visitors and residents
For foreign residents and visitors in Labuan Bajo, the shaking was noticeable inside a hospital but did not trigger a tsunami warning. BMKG said the earthquake had no tsunami potential. No casualties, structural damage or an evacuation in Labuan Bajo were stated.
People waiting for patients were seen in the second-floor corridor of Siloam Hospital Labuan Bajo after the shaking. The earthquake was also reported in Manggarai Barat and other areas of East Nusa Tenggara. The event was a tectonic earthquake in the Flores region.
BMKG identified the coordinates as 8.25 degrees south latitude and 120.42 degrees east longitude. No further official action or a timetable for what would happen next was stated.
