NTT Records 2.59% Annual Inflation, 0.40% Deflation in August 2026

Kupang — East Nusa Tenggara’s annual inflation stood at 2.59% in August 2026, while consumer prices in the province fell 0.40% month-on-month, according to the provincial office of Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS).

BPS NTT head Matamira B. Kale said the province recorded deflation of 0.40% in August, bringing calendar-year inflation for January–August 2026 to 1.65% and year-on-year inflation to 2.59%.

The August annual rate was higher than July’s 2.43%, but remained below the national August inflation figure of 3.19% reported by BPS and summarized in national economic coverage.

Gold jewellery leads annual price increases

National analyses of BPS data place East Nusa Tenggara among the provinces with the lowest inflation in August, with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) level of 110.74 and an annual inflation rate of 2.59%.

According to a breakdown of BPS figures cited by a national data-focused outlet, the expenditure group with the highest annual increase in the province was personal care and other services, dominated by gold jewellery.

The same analysis reports that gold jewellery was among the most dominant commodities contributing to inflation nationally and in several provinces, including East Nusa Tenggara, alongside items such as broiler chicken, gasoline, rice, cooking oil and household fuel.

These findings are consistent with BPS commentary at the national level, which highlights gold jewellery as a key driver within the personal care and other services group in August 2026.

Food prices underpin monthly deflation

BPS NTT attributed the province’s August deflation primarily to lower prices in the food, beverages and tobacco group.

The provincial office reported that the group’s price index fell by 1.13% month-on-month, making it the largest negative contributor to August inflation in East Nusa Tenggara.

BPS explained that abundant supply helped push down prices of several food commodities, including shallots, tomatoes and cayenne peppers, while sufficient chicken stocks also eased poultry prices.

According to BPS NTT, airfares weakened as travel demand softened after the school holiday period and following a reduction in aviation fuel prices at the start of August, further reinforcing the deflationary trend.

Inflation patterns across provinces

In a national comparison of provincial inflation released in mid-September, data compilations based on BPS statistics list East Nusa Tenggara among the five provinces with the lowest annual inflation rates in August 2026.

The same comparison confirms the province’s CPI level at 110.74 and notes that price indices in its districts and cities were generally below the national average.
