Police probe Dutch man’s fatal fall from Uluwatu hotel’s fifth floor

Denpasar — Police in Bali are investigating the death of a 60-year-old Dutch national who fell from the fifth floor of a luxury hotel in Uluwatu, Ungasan Village, South Kuta, Badung, on Saturday night, 12 September 2026, according to Denpasar Police and local media reports.

Denpasar Police spokesman First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya said officers are reviewing surveillance footage that appears to show the man climb over a corridor barrier on the hotel’s fifth floor before falling to the ground inside the hotel compound.

Police identified the man by his initials, MJR, and described him as a Dutch citizen aged 60. They have not released his full name.

Sequence captured on CCTV

According to the Denpasar Police account cited in several media reports, CCTV footage shows the man walking toward the corner of a fifth-floor corridor barrier at around 22:10 WITA. He then lifts a curtain or blind, steps over the barrier and stands on the outer wall before he is seen falling a few minutes later, at about 22:14 WITA.

Police estimate the fall from the fifth floor at roughly 14 metres. Officers received a report of the incident later that night, and the man was found lying on a road within the hotel grounds.

Initial police statements have described the incident as a suspected jump, but investigators say they are still piecing together the full chronology and cause of death.

Discovery and medical findings

Local reports state that the man was discovered lying on an internal road area of the hotel, after which emergency services were called to the scene. He was evacuated in an unresponsive condition and later declared dead following medical examination.

Police identification officers documented injuries including abrasions on the right side of the abdomen, a wound to the right elbow or right side, and a fracture of the right wrist or right hand, consistent with a fall from height. The body was taken to RSUP Prof Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar for further examination.

As of mid-September, police had not publicly released a formal autopsy report or toxicology findings, and the investigation into the precise cause and circumstances of death remained open.

Hotel stay and payment issue

Police and hotel representatives told local media that the man had been staying at the hotel since 16 August 2026. During that period, staff repeatedly asked him to settle his accommodation bill.

Reports from several outlets state that the guest had fallen behind on payments and had not paid the bill for approximately one month at the time of the incident. Police have not indicated that the payment dispute was directly linked to the fall, and have not announced any criminal charges in relation to the case.

Investigators from Denpasar Police say they continue to review CCTV recordings and other evidence to clarify whether the fall was intentional, accidental or involved other factors. They have not named any suspects and have not publicly alleged the involvement of another person in the man’s death.
