Semarapura — Hindu communities across the Nusa Penida islands held the annual Ngusaba Madya Jagat ceremony at Pura Kahyangan Jagat Batumedau in Klungkung on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, coinciding with Purnama Kapat.

The ceremony rotates between Pura Batumedau and Pura Penataran Ped. This year, Pura Batumedau hosted the main observance. Reports described a sequence of sacred rites leading to the ceremony’s peak, followed the next day by Nyepi Segara, when activity in Nusa Penida’s waters stopped for 24 hours.

Why Ngusaba Madya Jagat matters to visitors

For foreign residents and visitors, the observance has a direct practical effect beyond the temple grounds. On Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, marine activity around Nusa Penida was suspended, including crossings, fishing, seaweed farming and marine tourism such as snorkeling and diving. One report said the suspension ran from 6 a.m. WITA (UTC+8) on Sunday until 6 a.m. WITA on Monday, Sept. 28.

The pause affected routes to and from Nusa Penida through Sanur, Kusamba and Padangbai. Boats and other vessels remained off the water during the observance, while the sea was given a period of quiet as part of the ceremony’s religious and environmental meaning.

Coverage of the main ceremony identified additional rites including Taur Madya, Mapadanan, Nangluk Merana, Mapekelem Madya Segara and Pawitenan. Another account described the wider sequence as including melasti and other preparatory ceremonies before the Purnama Kapat peak, with the full observance concluding with mepadanan.

The rotating arrangement is an established feature of the annual tradition: after the 2026 ceremony at Pura Batumedau, the following year’s Ngusaba Jagat Nusa was scheduled to take place at Pura Penataran Ped. The reports also described Betara Tedun Kabeh as part of the ceremony’s ritual tradition.
