BPS data for July 2026 show that Bali had the highest occupancy rate for star-rated hotels among Indonesia’s provinces, at 67.29 percent, followed by Banten at 58.89 percent and Yogyakarta at 58.51 percent, with the national average at about 54.5 percent for star-rated properties.
According to the same BPS release, non-star hotels and other accommodation in Bali posted a separate July occupancy rate of around 42 percent, measured as a distinct category from the star-rated segment.
Industry reporting based on hotel operator statements later cited an average occupancy of roughly 80 percent in Bali during the Independence Day momentum in August 2026, encompassing both star-rated and non-star hotels. Those comments described strong demand across major tourism areas rather than a single province-wide monthly statistic.
What the two figures measure
BPS compiles its room occupancy rate, or tingkat penghunian kamar (TPK), from official surveys of classified accommodation, publishing province-level averages for star-rated hotels and a separate series for non-star hotels and other lodging. The 67.29 percent figure for Bali therefore applies only to star-rated properties over the full month of July 2026.
The industry estimate of around 80 percent occupancy, by contrast, came from hotel operators represented by the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) and referred to the Independence Day period in August, not the whole of July. Because PHRI’s statement did not specify the number of hotels or rooms included, nor the exact dates covered, it is not possible from public information to calculate a weighted average that would make the 80 percent figure directly comparable with BPS’s July breakdown for Bali.
The periods also differ. BPS’s July statistic captures the full calendar month and was linked in commentary to domestic school-holiday travel and events that lifted demand for accommodation nationally. The PHRI-linked estimate focused on the Independence Day momentum around 17 August 2026, a peak holiday window when occupancy typically rises.
How readers should interpret the gap
The numerical gap between 67.29 percent and about 80 percent does not, on its own, show that hotel demand in Bali jumped by roughly 13 percentage points. The BPS figure is a province-wide monthly average for star-rated hotels in July, while the industry estimate reflects a busy holiday period in August and covers a broader set of properties.
A more precise reading is that both sets of data point to strong accommodation demand in Bali, but they describe different slices of the market. BPS provides standardized monthly statistics that can be compared across provinces and over time for clearly defined hotel classifications. PHRI’s comments give an operational snapshot from hotel operators during a peak holiday period, blending star-rated and non-star properties.
BPS also reported that Indonesia’s overall star-rated hotel occupancy rose modestly in July 2026 compared with both the previous month and a year earlier, underlining a gradual recovery supported by domestic school holidays, conferences and sporting events. Local reporting on Bali indicated that the province’s July star-rated occupancy was higher than the national average and had increased from June.
For readers, the key point is that meaningful comparisons require matching hotel categories, geographic coverage and clearly defined dates. Until BPS and PHRI publish directly comparable August figures using the same classification and period, the July 67.29 percent statistic and the August 80 percent estimate should be understood as complementary context rather than conflicting measurements.
