Singakerta — Dozens of worshippers gathered at Griya Dauh Labak in Singakerta, Ubud, Gianyar, on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, to perform melukat during the Banyu Pinaruh observance instead of bathing at a beach or public spring.
At the griya, the residence of a sulinggih, water was consecrated through the recitation of mantras before being sprinkled and applied to the worshippers. Families arrived during the morning, including parents bringing young children.
Why it matters to readers
The gathering illustrates how Banyu Pinaruh observance can take place in a religious residence rather than at a beach or public spring. For foreign residents and visitors, the practice is a reminder that Balinese Hindu purification rituals are organized through different settings, with the setting and ceremony shaped by local religious customs.
The report said some worshippers chose the griya because it was closer to home and because they were concerned about high waves and difficult conditions at the coast. Families with toddlers also faced the practical concern of navigating crowded beaches and springs.
Griya Dauh Labak was among the places receiving worshippers that morning. Participants were also served nasi dirah, yellow-colored rice associated in some parts of Bali with prosperity. The ceremony therefore combined purification with a communal observance centered on family and local tradition.
Banyu Pinaruh follows Saraswati Day in the Balinese Hindu calendar. On this occasion, worshippers commonly seek holy water for self-purification, but the report shows that the ritual does not require everyone to gather at the same type of public water site.
