Denpasar — Bali Governor Wayan Koster said on Oct. 11 that the province would intensify the use of solar power, electric vehicles and other clean-energy sources, with emissions from coal and oil potentially cut by 90 percent by 2040.
The statement, made at a Bali Climate Week news conference in Denpasar, brings forward the province’s emissions ambition from the net-zero target set for 2045. Koster linked the earlier goal to faster energy transition and wider transport electrification, while Bali also plans a gas-fired power plant targeted for completion in 2031 and further solar-power development.
Why Bali’s emissions target matters to visitors and foreign residents
For people living in or visiting Bali, the policy points to a gradual expansion of cleaner electricity and battery-powered transport rather than an immediate change to every journey. The provincial government’s electric-vehicle push covers transport and is intended to reduce emissions associated with fuel combustion. The reports do not announce a new visitor requirement, a ban on conventional vehicles or a specific deadline affecting foreign residents.
Bali’s clean-energy framework includes measures for rooftop solar power and battery-powered electric vehicles. The provincial government has already adopted a regulation on battery electric vehicles and has promoted supporting infrastructure, including public charging stations. Koster said the campaign would become more progressive this year, alongside efforts to expand clean energy.
The 2040 projection is presented as an optimistic possibility, dependent on consistent implementation of energy transition and transport-electrification measures. The stated focus is on reducing emissions linked to coal and oil, while the province continues work toward energy independence and net-zero emissions.
