Denpasar — A 39-year-old American woman was taken to Sanglah General Hospital on Oct. 11 after authorities said she allegedly tried to jump from the second floor of a Bali immigration office.
The woman, identified by the initials JA, was first apprehended by officers from the Public Order Agency, known as Satpol PP, in Badung regency after residents became concerned about her behavior. Officials later handed her over to immigration officers, who took her to the hospital for a medical examination.
Authorities said immigration officers managed to prevent the woman from jumping. I Putu Surya Dharma, a spokesman for the regional office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, said officials had been unable to obtain enough information from her during a brief questioning.
Why it matters to foreigners in Bali
The incident illustrates how local authorities may coordinate with immigration officials and medical services when a foreign visitor is considered vulnerable or in need of immediate care. For foreigners in Bali, an encounter involving immigration authorities can therefore extend beyond visa or entry matters when officials believe a medical assessment is necessary.
JA had reportedly arrived in Indonesia in March. Officials said they were in contact with the American consulate in Bali about her situation. The report also said authorities suspected she might be depressed, citing the account provided by Satpol PP officers.
Before the immigration-office incident, JA had reportedly been seen wandering around Canggu with a dog. A local resident followed her until she stopped at an empty open garage and sat down, after which she was advised to take shelter at a local police station. She refused, prompting the involvement of Satpol PP officers.
The report said JA was taken to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar for a medical examination. It did not state what further action authorities planned after that examination.
