Denpasar — Indonesian police have arrested Australian national Arron Robert Brokenshire, 36, in South Denpasar on suspicion of possessing and distributing marijuana and synthetic tobacco, following a tip-off from local residents about a foreign drug dealer operating in the area, according to Denpasar Police and multiple media reports.
Police say Brokenshire was detained at around 7pm on 10 August 2026 at the Dewi Sri Apartments on Jalan Raya Kepaon in Pemogan Village, South Denpasar, and remains in custody pending court proceedings.
The allegations have not yet been tested in court, and Brokenshire is entitled to the presumption of innocence until convicted by a court.
Arrest and alleged evidence
Denpasar Police’s narcotics division state that the arrest followed information from the local community alleging that a foreign man was distributing narcotics in South Denpasar.
After monitoring the location, officers arrested Brokenshire at his residence in the Dewi Sri Apartments and searched his room.
Police report seizing 37 small plastic packets containing dried leaves, stems and seeds suspected to be marijuana, with a total net weight of 36.64 grams, along with two packets of tobacco suspected of containing synthetic narcotics weighing 21.30 grams.
Investigators also reportedly confiscated a bong and an electronic scale from the apartment.
According to police, Brokenshire told investigators he bought the cannabis for about IDR 2 million, roughly AUD 160, from an unidentified seller at Kuta Beach.
Suspect background and legal status
Media reports identify Brokenshire as originally from Mona Vale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in New South Wales.
Denpasar Police say he is being held, together with the seized evidence, at Denpasar City Police Headquarters while the investigation continues.
Police have indicated that Brokenshire will be charged under Article 111 paragraph (1) of Indonesia’s Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009, relating to the possession of narcotics.
If convicted under that article, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 12 years in prison.
Reports state that police are continuing investigations to identify other individuals suspected of involvement in the alleged trafficking.
Timeline and broader context
Local and international reports indicate that the arrest occurred on 10 August 2026, with details of the case made public in early September.
Summaries of the case directed at foreign visitors highlight that the alleged dealing activity took place in South Denpasar and stress Indonesia’s strict penalties for narcotics offences.
Indonesia maintains tough drug laws, and authorities frequently warn foreign nationals that possession and distribution of narcotics, including cannabis, can carry lengthy prison terms.
As of the latest reports, there is no public record of a court verdict in Brokenshire’s case, and he is reported to be awaiting trial.
